BAP115 Audio Equipment

This paper is intended to address the practical knowledge and application of audio engineering tools at an operational level. The lesson development is designed to bring operational competence on each audio device.

BAP130 Industry Studies

Two of the principal sectors of the audio industry, 'recording studio' and 'live sound' reinforcement, are addressed in this paper. This becomes the platform for the audio industry sectors studied in subsequent years.  Industrial safety and industry related OSH requirements.

BAP135 Information Technology

Computers have become essential in a large amount of professional audio applications.  This paper prepares students in the use of a personal computer as a tool for sound design, music (MIDI), as well as small business management and document preparation and presentation.

BAP150 Communications

Personal communication skills are developed with the intention of preparing professionals to operate their people skills successfully. Writing skills, and basic researching, are also developed here.

Semester 2

BAP100 Acoustics

Sound is explored, both theoretically and practically, providing an understanding of the audio process. Binaural localisation of sound gives a necessary platform from which all further sound mixes, and decisions, will benefit.

BAP120 Business Studies

This paper aims to provide students with the ability to discuss the evolution of the music and recording industry. An in-depth knowledge of the different roles and job descriptions in the music industry. The experience needed to suggest plans and procedures to implement a wide range of projects within the industry. The ability to explain the New Zealand music industry, and its supporting societies and organisations.

BAP125 Electronics

As well as electrical and electromagnetic theory, audio electronics includes the ability to maintain equipment, implement reasonable repairs, and rudimentary circuit construction.

BAP145 Music Technology

Audio technicians work for a significant part of their time with music tracks. This paper develops the student to be at least a rudimentary musician, assuring an acceptable understanding when dealing with the music industry. It is, at times, necessary for sound engineers to follow a manuscript, especially when recording instrumentals as in the case of classical music, subsequently the pursuit of music theory and music history are necessary elements.

Semester 1

BAP215 Audio Equipment

This paper is intended to address the critical use of all manner of sound engineering tools, with professional choices made in the application of each device.

BAP235 Information Technology

This paper is intended to address the use of computers in advanced audio situations, multi media situations, as well as small business management, and basic business webpage designing.

BAP230 Industry Studies

Many major audio industry sectors are discussed in depth in this paper, which should become the central focus of study in the second year.

BAP250 Professional Studies

This paper aims to prepare the student for professional practice by presenting research as a uniting strategy for practice, theory and scholarship.  Both scientific and interpretative knowledge will be drawn upon in preparing the student to become a competent consumer of research.  Students will also be assisted to develop skills as a beginning researcher.

The student will study different types of scientific and interpretative inquiry and personal experience will be used to identify areas in requiring research, and for the utilisation of research findings.

Semester 2

BAP200 Acoustics

Room acoustics and sound proofing/correcting, as it relates to studio recording and music venue locations, are addressed in this paper, both theoretically and practically.

BAP220 Business Studies

Small business management is essential for anyone intending to, or finding themselves, running their own enterprise.

BAP225 Electronics

Active electronic circuit construction, and common fault finding, are the accents of this paper. 240 volt instruction should ensure that students can operate safely with mains electricity.

BAP245 Music Technology

Creative skills are to be developed in an industry that is extremely reliant on creativity in production. Musical and aural skills are further advanced here.

Year Three

Semester 1 and 2

BAP300 Applied Acoustics

Specialised audiological ear testing is addressed, a foundation for future industrial or hospital vocations. Analytical assessments of indoor areas are practised.

BAP330 Industry Applications

An accent on theatre sound production with it's creative audio implications and large ensemble recording. Particularly high level performance in all key areas is developed in this year. An overview of the lighting profession is essential at this stage, as many live sound operators are being asked to supply basic lighting along with their hire sound services.

BAP350 Professional Studies

Skills in producing music are developed. Acute hearing skills are developed in this paper.

BAP355 Specialist Audio

Specialist audio is a paper that offers students the opportunity to specialise in two areas of choice, all involving advanced and/or investigative applications within a wider audio field.  Other areas will be added in time, to reflect new developments and refinements within the broad field of audio, and staff research interests.

BAP365 Major Project

This paper offers a chance for third year students to be involved in a major project.  This will take the form of either a portfolio of recordings with written analysis and reflections, or a research project.
